SEED - SOURCE OF LIFE

PAREDES DE COURA SCHOOL

On February 27th, Ivone and Joep from the Quinta das Águias Association invited us to join them to speak to the 5th and 6th grade classes at Paredes de Coura School.

In an hour and a half period, with three classes present in each session, the importance of preserving the soil, wild plants, seeds and especially local seed varieties was discussed.

Many seeds of different sizes, shapes, and smells were on display, sparking intense curiosity among the students. Many of the children were familiar with some of the local seeds, such as millet and the ground bean, a bean similar to the black-eyed bean but more yellow in color.

They were asked to search their family and friends for seeds of ancient origin or those known as traditional varieties during the month of March. Following the students' research, a seed exchange will take place on March 28th at 2:30 pm at the Loja Rural in Paredes de Coura.

Let's not let these resilient and special seeds die!

Each hike has a primary, often unforeseen, focus. On the 15th, we gathered a group of people in Lanhelas-Caminha, with the help of Corema – the Heritage Defense Association based in the same parish. The autumn season offers a verdant aerial view—from the observer down to the ground—and flowering is quite rare: it's the season of foliage and cleansing. The focus of this hike was based on the medicinal aspects of the plants, which in large quantities offer us alterative/purifying, vulnerary, astringent, demulcent, and tonic properties. These words would initially be completely unfamiliar to many but gradually began to make sense to the participants, and how important it is to understand the constituents of these plants so we can ingest what our bodies need.

The attentive gaze with which we observe plants and their characteristics is essential in our daily lives. We must maintain this observant eye on our bodies and our routines to understand what is in excess or deficient, so as to avoid imbalances that can lead to disease. Let's eat more leaves during the winter: more chickweed, more sweet clover, more angelica, and more nettles!

A VERY SPECIAL SHARE

On October 24th, 25th, and 26th, we participated in a very special event that took place for the first time in Portugal: the Permaculture Convergence, held in Fundão. The first day was dedicated to caring for the land, where we all felt reconnected to the mother energy through the various practical activities that took place. On the second day, with our feet more firmly planted on shared ground, we dedicated time to people and sharing experiences: both community-based and from transition movements and the various permaculture projects that are spreading throughout the country with great force. The third day was dedicated to sharing surplus produce, where we were able to exchange excess produce, seeds, and knowledge. A weekend that felt like a full week, full of dedication from the people who organized it and made the impossible happen.

It was three days of sharing a wealth of learning, with each other, and with the whole.
I felt inspired and, above all, convinced that we are truly capable of shaping a better world. Thank you for every smile we shared!
